i've tried a few, but always end up going back to a short line. too many situations for me dictating where i want the fender- tie to a clean, gunwale rail, etc. just easier to tie it where you need it.

I use "Fender Tender II". The line goes through it, and it's just a clip type thing, that fits perfectly on my windshield frames, and my bow rails. The height is adjustable and everything. I love them. Sure am glad the previous owner of the boat left them with the fenders when I bought the boat! (Dad's sure are wonderful!)

I use these

They work the best of any fender adjusting gizmos I've tried over the years.

They strap around the rail and have a cam lock attachment for height adjustment.

i use these fender locks, they don't really lock though. the previous owner left the bases behind on the hull so i just had to buy new plastic pieces to run the fender lines through.

I use the same as Stratocaster but you must make sure to tie a knot at the end of the line incase it slides through which has happened a few times .The knot will stop you from losing the fender.

Short line and a clove hitch on any rail. Can be adjusted for any height and they don't slip under fender type loading. You can add a half hitch for peace of mind, but they don't really need it. The perfect fender knot.

To avoid bending railings, I recommend that you tie fenders around the base of stanchions as this is a much stronger securing point.

Re: How do you Hang Your Fenders?

Depends on your intended use and type of boat/docking situation. I use the quick-release clips like what salty87 showed, but I'd only trust them for calm water and occasional supervised use. They're far too small and weak to support a fender if you're leaving it docked in rougher water or overnight, etc. If a fender gets caught under dock/boat on the right wave with one of these it'll just pop off and be gone forever...

Re: How do you Hang Your Fenders?

I have fender cleats down the side of my boats, spaced every four feet or so. Bumper lines have a loop that keeps it an average height - set for my personal docks - and I can wrap it around the cleat to bring it up if needed. The extra cleats also help when springing the boat for parking in not-so-protected waters....
They get unlooped and stored in the boat while we're underway. I absolutely LOVE it when other folks don't pull their fenders in while underway. I haven't had to buy one for my own boat in years! :)
- Scott

I'd be very careful using fender cleats to spring unless I was sure they were well secured and backed behind with a substantial backing plate.

I was gonna comment on salty's fender locks, but chinewalker has the right idea. I used to signal people when they were bouncing fenders along at speed (They usually just wave though) . Now I just follow them, much more profitable. :D Just too bad these guys didn't all buy the same color fenders! ;)

Re: How do you Hang Your Fenders?

Hi Dancer,
Yes, my fender cleats are backed with a plywood backer and are bolted, not screwed...
My 15-footer has quite a bit of bow flair and won't sit right unless I either tie the stern line really tight, which is not a good idea, or leave a little slack with the stern line and spring it to hold the boat parallel to the dock. The stern line still takes the brunt of the waves, but the spring keeps things true...
- Scott
