I'm going to be picking -up a used 1984 Yamaha 115 outboard, that I'm buying in a week, and I'm wondering, first of all, can I bring it home lying on it's side in the back of my truck and secondly, will it be alright on it's side for a month or more while I wait for warmer temps. to do the install on the boat? Currently it is on a stand at the dealer.

jmo.. it should be ok to bring home laying on its side, id set it on an old tire with an old blanket between. and it should be ok for short term on its side, but if you can store it vertical its a better option. again...jmo.

Take your boat to the dealer. They will put it on the boat. Should be no cxharge & FAR SAFER.

thanks cyclops2 you are right, that would be preferable, but I still have a little work to do on the transom and the boat is stored for winter! Actually, the dealer wants something like five hundred bucks to help me with the install so I said NO THANK-YOU.

finish the transom faster. NO SCRATCHES if the dealer puts it on the boat. Besides. By iceout you will have the controls ready. :)

I boat in Clayton NY on the St. Lawrence. Canada has beautiful lawns & gardens.

Warmer weather? Summer is the nicest day you have up there! LOL.

If it is a 2 stroke and has been stored at the dealer, then carbs will most likely be empty and there will only be residual oil inside the crankcase. You can store it any way you want for an indefinite period with no harm and in all probability nothing will leak either. Just protect the finish with a shipping pad or thick blankets.

You will need two men and a boy to mount it or alternatively an engine lift. I handle engines of this size all the time by myself and mount them with a 1/2 ton chain hoist attached to the top of my brick arches. (15 feet tall)

If it is a 4 stroke you may need to drain the crankcase oil.

thanks. Couldn't agree with you more cyclops2- My grass is excellent and gardens in Canada are beautiful. And Frank, I'll have you know that |I got at least three days of boating in last "Summer" lol. Actually I had one boat or another in the water from May thru til Nov.. still, "Summer" sure goes by quick. Can't wait!
