How do you know if you,re running lean??

Hi,
Might be a daft question but, done my carb rebuilds,full engine decarb etc, & in the process had to tweak the slow speed idle screws.......everything sounds better than before, & seems to running a lot smoother.
However, if I give her a bit of gas in neutral by the remote lever, I get a sneeze & a puff of smoke. Is this a sign of running a bit lean????
Is this an issue I should resolve???????

Hi Davy,
Yes, that sounds like a bit of a lean condition. I would richen it back up a hair, as you'd probably notice it when you jab the throttle to get out of the hole...
