I recently purchased a 1976 Evinrude 9.9 HP model 10624, I pulled the lower unit and decided to replace the water pump, I also removed the power head valve cover and noticed there was no thermostat. The engine was very clean including the internals on the lower housing. I purchased a new thermostat and waterpump kit and installed I just started the motor in a 50 gallon drum.
Afte a while the water spray started spitting out the exhaust relief hole uat the underside back of the engine lower cover, it seemed quite hot and I am not sure if it was being heated by the exhaust or was the engine running that warm??
I placed my fingers on the power head and it also felt quite warm, is this normal or is this engine overheating or do they run like this with a thermostat in them??? I turned the motor off and allowed it to cool and it started fine.
What tests can I do to determine if the water pump is working fine and that the thermostat is functioning properly

Thanks for any advise
I also have the factory manual on this engine and it doesn't address my ?

When a thermostat is present there shall be no water coming out of the exhaust ports just below the cowling until the engine heats up and the thermostat opens. Then water shall exit via the exhaust ports and that water should be warm.If your engine is overheating it will start to run badly and a strong smell will be present. From what you have posted all seems fine.
