I recently purchased a 1976 Evinrude 9.9 HP model 10624, I pulled the lower unit and decided to replace the water pump, I also removed the power head valve cover and noticed there was no thermostat. The engine was very clean including the internals on the lower housing. I purchased a new thermostat and waterpump kit and installed I just started the motor in a 50 gallon drum.
Afte a while the water spray started spitting out the exhaust relief hole uat the underside back of the engine lower cover, it seemed quite hot and I am not sure if it was being heated by the exhaust or was the engine running that warm??
I placed my fingers on the power head and it also felt quite warm, is this normal or is this engine overheating or do they run like this with a thermostat in them??? I turned the motor off and allowed it to cool and it started fine.
What tests can I do to determine if the water pump is working fine and that the thermostat is functioning properly

Thanks for any advise
I also have the factory manual on this engine and it doesn't address my ?
