if its a beautiful classic looking wooden boat id say paint. like gold leaf. fiberglass boats id go with quality decal. here is a pic of my decal. they held up well for ten plus years. by the way you can have them custom made right here from iboats.

Most sighn shops these days will make up the plastic letters to whatever size you want.
also remember you need to register your boat and post ID# on the bow, both sides.

I've used a computer controlled cutter and made decals. Put them on my truck and they delaminated...so there must be a weather (water) proof vinyl. (I'll google it)

Thanks for the iboats tip....I forget to go shopping there.

Any sign shop can use their computer cutter to cut self-adhesive vinyl letters in a bazillion different fonts and styles. The letters come mounted on a piece of masking tape such that you stick the tape down with the letters, peel the tape up, and the letters stay stuck to your boat. The letters are absurdly durable and will last at least ten years. The price depends on the size of the letters, with small letters you're not looking at more than 20-30 bucks max, but as the letters get above 6" tall the price gets high quickly.

Surface preparation is SUPER IMPORTANT! The surface must be free of any waxes and oils.

I must have used some cheap vinyl. (public school system for ya)

My wife and I are still working on a few names:

"The 'Pike' Magnet"

"Bloominator"....our lake (lake winnipeg) is nitros rich and every summer has huge algae blooms. Enviromentally edgy.

"Shabinaka" - terrible spelling on my part. Low German slang word for "mischief".

I'm having a hard time remembering off the top of my head, maybe $60? I'll have to find my receipt.

I think my letters are 6.5" tall if that helps. I also did the 2 color gradient, I think it looks great.

Ya, thanks for including that also. I think the biggest I can get is 4". Not a lot of space back there.

hmmmm, have to think about a naming ritual. Is there one?

well if you wanna name it "sanchez" or "low n slow" you could prolly peel some chrome letters off a lowrider at the mall..... that would be cheap

Re: How do you put name on boat?

i used hardline products stickers for my lic. number. i had enough left over to put my name on my transom. 3'' tall. but it looks ok and didn't cost a dime as i already had the numbers and letters bought for my lic. number.

here's the christening i used for Lime Time... http://www.commanderbob.com/art19.html

and do christen it. superstitious or not. which i'm not. but i ain't tempting fate..

edit, a link to how the 3'' letters look on my boat. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=222039
nothing spectacular, basic, but gets the idea across.

Thanks for the link. I'm relieved to read that breaking the champagne bottle is optional...instead everyone can have a drink and you pour some on the bow.
