Re: How do you remember the oil?

hello
I do it by never ever putting gas in first. that is how a customer of mine does it now. he ran up to the 7-11 and got gas in his 12 gallon aux tank but forgot to bring the oil. went ahead and filled it. then but in on the boat. one thing led to another and he called me from the sound saying he remembered the oil about the time it started knocking. it was a 6 month old 150 yamaha that he had special ordered without oil injection cause he did not trust it> 3000 dollars later he was back in action:)
good luck keep posting and never ever ever add the gas first :) :)

Re: How do you remember the oil?

I got a small magnet and using a stencil put
O-I-L on it. I have a small metal plate (glued) on my tanks, that it sticks on. When I empty a tank I turn the magnet upside down. before using that tank I check to see if its right side up or not. If up side down I havent added oil. As I carry oil in the boat and in the truck its normally handy. Herself :D thought this one up as she had read or heard someone talking about forgetting to add oil and she thinks, rightly, that I already spend enough time on the boat when it runs not to mention when it breaks.

I actually know a couple guys that put a tag next to the gas cap saying "OIL" or "Did You Put In the Oil?". They swear by it.

Actually, the day before I killed it I was going to write OIL on my tank with a sharpie...but it got dark before I got around to it so I never did it. :(

velcro an oil mixing bottle or old oil bottle to the gas tank, next to the filler.

Re: How do you remember the oil?

Any of the above methods will work .Bare in mind that one could also forget to add oil to a vro reservoir and do the same damage if the low oil alarm was not operational.Adding oil needs to become second nature,.......sort of like remembering to pull your pants up after a visit to the little boys room.

Re: How do you remember the oil?

Well it may sound basic but here is how I do mine for both boats. I get all my jugs together and add the right amount of oil to each jug than go to the gas station fill it up, than come back home and pour it into the tanks. I NEVER add stragiht gas to any tank. THe oil is added first into gas jugs and that way its mixed properly and I never have to worry about adding it. Besides if I have too much gas for the boats tank at this time, I haven't added too much oil or too much gas and worry about the mix being off. May sound like alot of work, especially for the 18 gallon bass boat tank. But when you consider the cost of repairing something so easily avoidable. I;d rather do it than pay the price.

Matt

Re: How do you remember the oil?

I don't do anything to remember. It is second nature. I take my 5 gallon cans to the station and put exactly 5 gallons in each. When I get home, the first thing I do is add the oil to the 5 gallon cans, then I take however many cans I need down to my dock and fill the boat. Adding the oil is very much second nature to me, I can't think of a time where I have almost not added the oil. Must be because I have used a lot of 2 stroke devices in my time, and have see too many people forget and pay the price. It is the same reason why I have never locked myself out of the house or locked my keys in my car, I always triple check everything. Did you repair that Merc or are you getting another motor?

ZM, I've good news and bad news for you. The good news is "you" will not likely ever forget the oil again, the bad news... very expensive lesson. Sorry about your misfortune.

Get a 4-stroke! :D

Seriously, make yourself a "pre-flight" check off plan. Everything from life jackets to spare fuses, to the oil. Can't miss.

Re: How do you remember the oil?

my gas tank is marked at every gallon, up to 12 gallons, i always fill up on the way to the lake. so when i get to the gas station i look to see how much gas i need, i measure out the oil & dump it into the tank, then i fill the tank with the amount of gas i added oil for. aint had a problem yet! first oil, then gas. :)

Re: How do you remember the oil?

Zmoz, did the old one have power tilt and trim? I am wondering if it could be fitted to a 69 125 horse. I know your motor was a 74, it seems like the leg and all that are the same, I'll have to research it. Also, what prop did it have? I would like to find a 13 or 14x19 pitch prop for fairly cheap.

Re: How do you remember the oil?

JasonJ - It does have power trim, but I will be keeping the old motor's mid section and putting on a new powerhead and lower unit. I will also be keeping the prop... :)

Once you add the oil, how do you remember that you did after you put the gas in? This two stroke stuff is too difficult, and then they expect me to be able to do all that math stuff.
