How do you remove oil from the bilge?

I recently had a new motor put in my 20' openbow runabout. The mechanics got a lot of oil in the bilge and even got it into the compartment under the floor where skis are typically stored. I removed the carpet and cleaned it out best I could but there still appears to be puddles of glue forming every day or so. It seems like the oil residue is still having a chemical reaction with the fiberglass and creating little glue puddles. Anyone know how to neutralize the oil then clean it out so I don't pump oil residue in to the lake?

Thanks.

Pick up some oil absorbent diapers & lay them in the bilge. They will soak up most of the oil. Then wipe the rest out with a biodegradable degreaser available at any parts store. The carpet in the ski locker is shot. It sounds like the oil is reacting with the carpet adhesive. Pull it & toss it. How'd they get oil in the ski locker?

I use Simple Green for oily stuff like that. The diapers sound like a good first step.

I would go back to the shop and have them fix it. Time to find new mechanics anyway though.

+1 on the Simple Green - get a spray bottle & soak the entire bilge area & ski locker with the high concentration mix & let it sit for a couple minutes, rinse & repeat as necessary.

Spread some kitty litter or Sta-dri (same baked clay product) on the carpet and bilge, leave it a few days. It will soak up the oil, then can vacuum it out easily.
