How do you start an outboard that is not on boat

I recently repowered my boat. My old 1995 Johnson 88 was taken off and placed on the back of my truck on a pallet. I got all the wiring harness, gauges, cables etc. binnacle throttle with key switch as well.

Now I am selling the old outboard and people want to hear it run. I built a stand for it, however it is not obvious to me how to hook it up to start it.

Where on the motor do I run the battery cables to start it?

Thank you

Well, make sure the stand is sturdy enough. The running motor has some torque, and will rotate on the steering tube, and turn the stand over if you are not careful.
Secondly, I would run it in some sort of tub deep enough to cover the top of the lower unit. Much better than muffs.

Third....Positive of the battery cable goes to one side of the starter solenoid. That terminal, since it is disconnected now, will be the large terminal that has NO BIG WIRE on it. The other
large terminal should still be tight and should have a big wire going to the starter.
The ground usually bolts to a stud near the starter, possibly use one of the starter mounting bolts. Any good ground.
DO NOT HOOK the battery cables up backwards. You will fry your rectifier. Double check your work there.

Plug the harness in, fill the tub, hook a fuel source up, and run it. Make sure it is peeing, etc.

Hook the plug up and run a set of jumper cables to ground on the motor and to the proper post on the solenoid, (not/red). Add a hose with an outboard muff for cooling and start with the keyswitch, as you normally would.

I recently sold my Johnson 65hp motors and one was hanging from a tree. The buyer wanted to see it run, so I hooked everything up as described -- a few cranks and Bang! She ran just fine!
