I have recently over heated and burned up my 5.0 MPI Mercruiser. When I say burned up I mean fried gaskets cracked manifold and a bad bearing.
I’m in the process of pulling the motor and putting a rebuilt 5.0/305 in. So my first step was the outdrive and I have never changed an impeller
so does this impeller look like it could cause an overheat?
Thanks

Impellers need to be replaced every 2-3 years depending on how much the motor is used..

My guess is you didnt watch the gauges or hear the overheat alarm?

That impeller is shot.

Y'all think it looks bad enough to cause catastrophic overheat? Definitely has a set, but I'd think that would still be able to move some water

for a gen ii impeller that is way far gone

either run without water supply for multiple minutes or a corroded lower pulling exhaust gases back through the pump

surprised you're replacing the entire long block, without seeing in person with destroyed pistons you may be able to get away with a valve job, new head gaskets and a tune up

I would bet there is something else that caused a big overheat. That impeller is pretty ugly, but I agree it should still be moving some water. Something else plugged up? A bad thermostat? Rusty scale filled water passages? I'd bet more than one cause.

That looks like an old crappy impeller that came out of a fried Merc 5.0 MPI with Alpha drive. You weren't planning on keeping it? :noidea:

Not sure it was the complete cause of your over heat . . . No alarms went off, or no looking at gauges???

By the time I notice we are over operating temperature and went to turn the key off the alarm sounded as I shut the motor off. I took all the plugs out of the motor and I would think it would turn over a lot faster than it is which leads me to believe it’s the bearings as to why I am ordering a new motor today. But maybe I’ll hold off till Monday. The motor will be out tomorrow with the bearings be the only thing causing the motor to have resistance?

You could rebuild what you have for $1500

Yes I figured the rebuild on mine would be a lot cheaper but with an empty slip waitin time is crucial! I think I’m just gonna go with the jasper 305 for 3400

I would be curious about what exactly might be wrong with the motor that is in it. I lost an impeller to the point it had no fins left and didn't know it until the alarm went off. Nothing was damaged except for the flappers.

I'm with thumpar. It doesn't take very long to pop the heads off, pull the pan and look at a few bearings.
