After watching gas hit $2.05 here on Long Island and reading some of the forum comments about gas prices I wondered, is gas more expensive today then in past years as compared to the general cost of living increase, and what about bread or milk? How many times have you heard on the 6 o'clock news that todays gas price is a bargain, well, the following Cost of Living Calculators will answer the question for you. The first link is a Federal Reverve Bank, the second link allows you to see if your salary has kept up with inflation or is it time for a raise.

http://woodrow.mpls.frb.fed.us/research/data/us/calc/

http://www.halfhill.com/inflation.html

The answers will be interesting,, :) ,,,these are just 2 of many Inflation Calculators available on the web.

Hi SlowlySinking,

How's retirement treating you?

Is there now, enough time in the day to do the things you really want to do, or does your significant other keep you busy doing things she wants you to do?

Re: How Expensive Is Gas?

Hi Kenny, good to hear from you. Retirement is, in a word, great. I thought about working for a few traffic consulting firms after retiring from Islip but I have a signed agreement that says I can't for two years, at least not for those who did work with the Town, and to be honest, after 40 straight years of working I'm ready for a break. Now I know what people mean when they say they don't know how they worked and did all the chores but can't seem to get them all done after retirement. It's really a sense of urgency, with every day Sunday or Friday and it doesn't matter which it is you tend to take all day to do what you once did in a few hours after work. As far as my significant other, she's the best friend, confidant, and wife a man could ask for. We tend to do most chores together and contrary to popular custom we get along better than when we worked, go figure. :)

RETIREMENT

IT AIN'T WHAT YOU THINK

I worked forty-five years for someone else
So that I could retire.
I dreamed of sleeping late
And sitting by the fire.

I dreamed of long vacations,
Enjoying stage and song.
But, let me set you straight on that concept,
It is simply wrong.

I did junk my safety glasses
And the work boots that cramped my toes.
But, the rest of it had a mind of it's own
And this is how it goes.

My wife had been thinking of retirement
And had plans of her own.
She had spent much time with the kids
But, now they are grown and gone.

We sold our cattle and horses
So we wouldn't have that chore.
I poured concrete over my alarm clock
But, I still wake up at four.

I get my eyes checked on Monday.
Ann gets hers checked the next day.
I go for a colon check on Wednesday
And pass my wife going the other way.

I have a dental appointment on Thursday.
Ann goes for a test on her heart.
Friday we go get prescriptions filled
And browse a while at Wal-Mart.

Saturdays we just stay home
And try to get the paper work right.
We can't take any over-night trips
'Cause we can't see to drive at night.

Restroom confusion keeps us out of church on Sunday
And we really do hate that.
There's nothing wrong with the restrooms,
We just can't remember where they're at.

We don't need to plan next week,
Just make sure we can drive.
And not forget where the hospitals and clinics are.
We'll need them to survive.

Once a week we visit the cemetery
And it seems more like home each time we go.
I look around at the headstones
And see everyone I know.

So, don't build your castles too high, my friend,
While strolling through the clover.
This is a typical week in retirement
And on Monday we start all over!

-Author Unknown-

Re: How Expensive Is Gas?

I am so friggin confused on this subject it is making my head hurt.

If there is a shortage which is created by OPEC, why are they still building new gas stations?

If there is a shortage how come you don't see any stations that are out of gas?

If there is an energy shortage, why does new housing have almost double of the square footage since the 70's?

We just need to face the fact that our own government does not want an alternative fuel. There would be a major decrease in revenue from the gas tax if there was. Not to even mention the loss of revenue for the stockholders of petro products.

If all our oil was pumped and refined here in the states, I would feel better knowing the money I spend for fuel would stay in the states and not going to a middle east. I would like to simply say that all these years of buying their oil has made them rich and poweful from our own money. We created the monster ourselves and now we need to slay it.

Yeah, gas is more expensive in other countries, but so is everything else there also. I also have the understanding that their incomes are higher also.

I still think that it is the tax base from fuel preventing alternative fuels. Why? Because if you use a home heating fuel in your diesel truck and get caught, you get fined. Why? because they didn't get their friggn road tax off of it!

Wait and see about the use of bio-deiesel and veggie oil. Even though the emmissions are better from it, they will find a way to prevent its use. Especially when more and more people start using it. Its a SAD SAD situation.. :(

SBN
Not sure about Kentucky, but I know in Ohio it is.

And they do check your tanks around here if you get in one of those inspection checks. Commercial or private, doesn't matter.

J/K SS. I would not burn it in my diesels anyway.
Just to expensive to take a chance on doing any damage to the engines.

Your newer diesels don't do anything but regular diesel very good.
