How far to go ?

I have completely torn down my 28ft pontoon and have a lot of good access to the engine compartment. so this leads to my question of how far to go....... I have been looking around on the engine and wiring harness and noticing a few things that could use a little TLC to make sure in my head that my power plant is 100%. (piece of mind)

I have been thinking about making a few repairs to the engine harness and cleaning up some of the corrosion on the terminals....
would it be wise to put a few new parts at it?
temp sender
oil pressure sender?
have the alternator tested and rebuilt?
as well as the starter?
plugs?
wires?

just a few things for a good piece of mind?

Chaffed or damaged wiring should be repaired. Easier to do it now than when you are stalled out on the water.
Oil pressure senders have a tendency to rupture the crimped seal between the parts. This puts oil all over everything and pumps the engine dry in very short order. Replacing it now would be prudent as they are not budget buster items.
Depending on the age and alternator type, if nothing else is done, just installing new brushes is insurance. Again, they are dirt cheap (depending on the alternator and where you buy the parts).
Now would be an excellent time to at least inspect the starter. Again, brushes and a solenoid should make it go for years.
Plugs and wires were discussed. If plugs have not been done recently then do them. Inspection of the wires will tell you whether or not to replace them.

Thanks silvertip,

I am pretty inclined when it comes to what to look for and to make sure is solid, I just wanted a little chit & chat about some of the complete "ground" up rebuild talk. I have a good alt/starter guy that is going to go through them both for me and recondition. I really need to make sure that we are in full operational order for next year and taking care of all these things give a good piece of mind about it as well. plug wires?
are they different for marine?

If it makes you feel better??
Then do it.
The starter?? How old?
Same with the alt.??
A rebuild by a pro is a good idea.
They usually replace the stuff we don't.
The end bushings for one.
They also usually have the test equipment to make sure it holds a load.
The others covered the rest.

wow, pretty sure I said nothing about it making me feel better......its a new boat to me and I am not familiar with when things got replaced or fixed or if they ever did. I am simply asking if anyone has any input about any repairs/check over for someone that just bought a boat with an I/O. Its my first I/O but not my first rodeo. its called piece of mind jerry

Re: How far to go ?

Piece of mind makes me feel better.
If in doubt?? Fix/repair it.
I just rebuilt both of my fuel pumps.
Nothing wrong,just piece of mind.
They could have been original.25years.
I bought these motors 2 years ago.
One I opened up and found 2 diaphragms and no gasket??
The other was perfect.Still changed it.
It makes me feel better knowing that I'm gonna get back from a trip 25mi out in the ocean.
Buying an OMC?
