So after I got the lower unit off of my VP DPSM outdrive, I found metal shavings inside the connector that connects the LU shaft to the mid section shaft. I also found them on the bearing under the dip stick cover. Would you do a complete tear down to find where its coming from or would you just fix the LU issues (needs a new bearing carrier) and put it back together. I don't have the funds to take it to a shop, so I'll be doing all the work, if you feel it needs to be torn down. All opinions welcome.

p.s. the shards look more like chunks b/c they are stuck together with oil. Each is thin with sharp edges.

So I decided to tear into the outdrive this morning and it was worse than I though. I'm pretty sure I'm just going to purchase a new(rebuilt) outdrive and not worry with spending the time to rebuild this one. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to get a fresh outdrive? Its a volvo penta DPS 1.95

Don't know how old your drive is, but that wear pattern looks wrong in the pics. Could be why it broke.

Watch EBay for a good used upper transmission. Should be $500 or less. Couple months ago i got a good one for $300 shipped. You will need to shim it to your mid section though.
You need to take the lower unit apart and inspect. IF its all good you just need a couple "O" rings and seals

I see all sorts of stuff on Ebay... Watch Craigslist too. A lot of parts, and junked boats for cheap. If ya get lucky, you'll find your gear case on a junked boat. Then you can part out the rest of the boat to recover your money. If ya don't mind a little work, free is always nice!
