How fast do you think this boat will run?

I just picked up a '77 175 Johnson for my aluminum 20' deep v with an 8' beam. I would say it's a relativly light boat, kind of bare bones with a wood floor and hydro turf. It's mainly for hunting and fishing. The reason I ask is because I am buying parts for the project (I have never run the boat) and I want to buy a speedometer for it. Would I be good with one that goes up to fifty? I have absolutely no idea what to expect for speed out of this boat. What do you guys think? Thanks.

Forget the speedometer........ get a GPS ..... a handheld one can be used anywhere and very accurate. Boat speedometer's are notoriously poor in the accuracy department.

Concur, get a hand held GPS, thay are always right where a pitot can be off by alot and eventually they always fail.

You can get a good one on Ebay for cheap and it will help you get around fishing too.

There's a guy on this site that owns a 22' Starcraft aluminum and has a Johnson 200...he gets past 50mph.

There are two other guys with big Mercs on 18' rigs that get closer to 60mph as well. Chinewalking becomes part of the experience at those speeds.:D

x3 on GPS being the best speedo to get. Even a car GPS or handheld will give great speed accuracy.

I suspect it'll go a lot faster than you'll want to go in it, most of the time. A light boat like that will be a rcoket with a 175 hanging off the transom, but it'll pound the snot out of you with minimal chop too. GPS is the way to go.

What would you suggest for a gps/fish finder for around two hundred bucks or so?
