Naw, it was a 5 on the canoe. But there was the 115 on the 13' and the 300 XP on the 19'. The best was the 325+ on the Mirage.

So far.

Re: How fast will a canoe go?

i have a 16' square stern osage canoe with a 2hp johnson (rated for 5)with 135# in front and 180# in back, and fishing gear,it will go 15mph by gps i have entered small rivers where they run into lakes with no problem except for 1 time i tryed to turn to miss a log, i decided it would be better to hit it,this motor turns all the way around to back up,motor at 90 deg to canoe is not good.i have crossed open lakes with no problems, its the best fishing boat i have been in, it will run with motor in 1' of water and less than 4" with motor up,no ramp needed, uses very little fuel

after saying that sometimes the 16'deep v boat is better

15 MPH with a 2-NO WAY. Maybe downstream with a 10 MPH current.

Re: How fast will a canoe go?

then the gps must be wrong
a canoe can be paddled at 2-4 mph,the motor at idle will go as fast as or faster than 2 people
can paddle it,at full speed it is trying to go
up on plane,i have allways wanted to try it with a
5hp just to see what it would do
canoe is a little over 30 inches wide plus side
sponsons, flat bottom,weighs 65#

Re: How fast will a canoe go?

you need to practice operating it in the river and know how to get out of a situation (plan ahead)to get control of the canoe when you turn
downstream you have to overcome the the speed of the water, watch the shore when trying to go upriver leave yourself plenty of room to get turned downstream and under control, most rivers have a hard bottom where there is permanant rapids.and there could allways be hidden rocks

Re: How fast will a canoe go?

Ok, I took out my new 17" Old Town canoe with a 5 hp Briggs and Stratton today for the first time. With about 450lbs in the canoe, it would go 18.1 WOT by GPS. It was sort of planing, but it was pushing alot of water. I think with a lighter load it would plane. Very stable even with big boat wakes. Had no problems and did not feel at all unsafe. I'm going to take it out next weekend by myself to see how fast it will go with just one person.

If you pull up to a steep sloped bank and hit it straight on with the nose up you will be upside down in the water so fast you won't know what hit you. FACT
