How hard should steering be?

1978 Bow Rider with a 115HP O/B Johnson. How difficult should this boat be to steer? The boat is new to me, so I don't know what's "normal". Cruising down the river, my 9 year old daughter strains to turn the steering wheel. If I'm doing circles at WOT, it's even difficult for me to whip the boat out of the turn. Steering feels stiff. Shot some grease into the zerks at the push/pull tube by the engine, no help. Should I expect the steering wheel to turn as easy as a car?

It Should be Nearly Effortless........<br />The Helm + Cable Aren't Really Servicable......<br />Complete Systems can be found for Under $200.......

On flat water:<br />Properly trimmed out at WOT you should be able to take your hands off the steering wheel and drive/steer the boat with the trim. No effort needed. Should be neutral. I think Bondo is on the right track..<br />Just my thoughts..<br /><br />Link
