I have 1983-150hp v6 seahorse Johnson. Drive shaft broke. Don't know if it is above the water pump or below. Is this something a shade tree mechanic can repair or should I bite the bullet and have it repaired? How much should something like this cost in round figures

Don't know about yours but I've got my Chrysler all apart right now and the drive shaft is easy to replace ( wish everything down there was that easy)

I don't know your motor but would not attempt it without the OMC shop manual for your specific motor especially if you have to open up the gearcase.

Its not too hard but it ain't too easy either. You will need a couple of special tools. A pair of giant snap-ring pliers with lock stop and a thin open end wrench to get the nut off the drive shaft. Also a puller to pull the bearing carrier.

Hi Pondman<br />I agree with all advice given so far. So here is an idea. Since we all have different opinions of our own ablities, way not see if you can check a manual out from the library. Maybe even purchess one. This way you can study up on the situation and determine wether or not this job is for you. If you decide to hire the work done, at least you will have a good idea of what you are paying for. This helps me choke down the cost of some jobs. Let me just add one more little note. The pictures in the manuals always make things look a little easier. It's funny they never photogragh someone working on a used machine.

Thanks for all the imput. When I fix something usually something else go bad. So I will just pay the mechanic and enjoy setting at home while it is fixed at least I will get a warranty if it breaks again. Can anyone in the Bradenton-Sarasota area recomend a good Johnson Mech.
