I can't find any specifications on the 85ETLR78C which tell me what the dry weight of the engine is. Does anyone know?

Cheers

Not sure where you get this wild guess of 320 LBS !!---The factory brochure that I have says 269 LBS.-----Older motors are often lighter than the new ones !!!!!

It's not a wild guess. I saw it on Outboard Engines form.

id put a crossflow V4 at over 300 lbs

It is hard for some folks to believe that the older motors were lighter.------The Evinrude catalogue for a 1970 115 HP lists it at 252 LBS--Just the way they are listed in the catalogue.-----------Check these catalogues on ------the old omc ----site if you like.

I find this interesting:confused: I checked out this old omc site, and brought questions. I have the 79 85hp model and its 1632cc the chart says in 77 the 85hp was 1517cc and the 115 and 140 was 1632 but they all weigh the same except for the 140 was heavier guess it doesn't matter weight wise but would his 78 be the 1517 or 1632:twitch:

I hope this settles the weight debate.

I have found that OMC, was using the same bore in many different models and HP's, but changing up fuel mixtures and volumes , and porting to increase HP... the V6 60 degree loopers of the 90's had the same BORE as the V4's....

Re: How heavy is the 85ETLR78C?

The early (up through 1978) powerheads were different displacements. The 85/100 engines were 92.6 cubes, the 115/125/135/140 were all 99.6 cubes. OMC standardized all V4 powerheads in 1979, at 99.6 cubes. (actually very early crossflows had 3 different displacements) I note the weight differences (to some extent) relate to the heavier 25" transom models which became factory available around the 77 model year.
