I just put a Mariner/Yamaha 25hp short shaft motor on a 14' Jon boat. What would be the min safe clearance for the skeg to the ground? I can raise the bunks as needed. The trailer is maxed out length wise with a 14' boat on it. I don't want to have to back too far in to the water to launch or load. The boat weighs maybe 400 pounds so winching it up the trailer won't be a problem.

If the skeg is any closer than 12 inches from the ground you run the risk of dragging it leaving or entering a parking lot. You can lower the boat on the trailer as far as possible. Just tilt the motor up and use a transom saver to prevent transom and motor damage due to flopping around at highway speeds.

With a 25 hp motor I didn't think i would need a transom saver but it looks like I will.
