How important is the exhaust housing/gearcase (exhaust) seal? 85hp 74 Johnson v4.

Just got a new motor, didn't include the exhaust seal. How important is it that the seal be in place? Seems to me that I would just end up with a small exhaust leak above the boot, which doesn't seem so bad. Then again...
What do you think?

That mid and lower rubber exhaust seal is important, esp the lower. If it's missing or misfit, it can leak exhaust gas into the midsection. Closest thing to it is the plastic impeller housing. Long term exposure to that exhaust heat could deform the impeller housing, causing water pump problems.
