So ive got a 91 Searay 170 that i spent all spring replacing all the stringers and floor due to them being rotted. I used nothing but high quality fiberglass and dougfir wood and 2 part foam and didnt skimp on the materials and labor at all. Well it came time to dewinterize and get ready for summer boating season and come to find out the 3.0 Mercruiser block cracked after our insanely cold winter we had. So im sitting here with a boat with a floor solid as a rock and stronger than from the factory probably with a shot engine hogging up a spot in the driveway after i just bought a new replacement Bryant. So what would you guys here on Iboats recomend doing? I see people selling boats all the time with rotted floors with good motors and no time or skills to fix the floor? Do you think anybody would want this Searay and just put their running motor and glass in a new transom? Or should we start checking scrap prices and just hope to even get a few dollars from it? Its just so unfortunate after the 6 months of work i put into this floor.

Its a project boat... Couple hundred bucks at best. You won't get anywhere close to your time or material costs, you NEVER get them back in a boat resto. Doesn't help that it is a 3.0. Very little demand for that...

As far as scrap, the block might be worth some, but you may have to pay to get rid of the hull. Best bet is craigslist for a couple hundred bucks and see what happens.

I sold my 1991 formula 242 after the engine had hydro-locked and damaged itself (bent rods, etc). I put it on Craigs list for about 1/2 for what the boat would be worth if the engine was good. I sold the boat fairly quickly.

My recommendation would be to figure out what it is worth with a good engine, and then price it so that it would be worth someone's while to buy it and put a new/rebuilt engine in it, etc. I do not think that you will be able to re-coup your investment in the structural repairs as that would price the boat out of interest range for any potential buyers.

Either swap an engine in or put a big free sign on it. 23 year old boat with a blown motor isn't going to have much of a market.

Put it on craigslist for $500-$1,000 and a good explanation of the work done and see what happens. You may be surprised.

If you want it gone in the next 60 minutes, put it on for free and watch your cell phone explode!

It will take more of your time, but you could part it out... You have a lot of desirable used parts... carb, distributor, possible risor, exhaust pipe, transom assembly, outdrive, prop, trailer, recyclable aluminum tank (if you don't sell it),. It all adds up if you are willing to take your time and sell it piece by piece.
