how interchangeable are Evinrude skitwin & johnson seahorse - both 40hp and 1970's pi

Hi
i'm currently running a Evinrude Ski Twin 40Hp Electric start but it has no battery charging output - well virtually no electics at all. I also have a Johnson Sea horse 40HP (again twin) but this has all electrics but is manual pull start - both same age (approx mid 1970's) both pin drives.

How interchangeable are the electrics on these 2 motors - that is, could i keep the ski twin with electric start and transplant the electric froim the sea horse onto it to give me battery charging ability.

ps the electric start is currently only the starter motor with a direct line to the battery via a 'on-off' switch

or in the forums opinion, would it just be easier to keep ski twin as it is and buy a solar charger to re-power the battery's

You need to come up with some model numbers. A Ski Twin is 33hp. The similar 40hp Norseman with Low Tension Magneto MIGHT have a charger built in. But the system is not an easy swap.

It would be much easier to have a deep cycle or combination battery and a battery charger. A deep cycle will easily run the starter for 3 or 4 days of solid fishing or camping without recharging. The motor does not require a battery to run if it is the universal magneto type (2 coils/points all under flywheel).

To put this into perspective, I have had many 40's over the years, and have never had a functional charging system on any of them.
