1st 16yrs. 2nd 3yrs and they will bury me in this one. Both boats bought within budget (under $10,000)no finance - you wont feel guilty not using it EVERY weekend. The bells and wistles can come later over time.

My response would be that if you do your homework up-front, you'd probably keep your boat longer than someone who just jumps-in.

Having said that, there's tons of web-sites to help you with your research (and you've made a great start here at iboats).

DiscoverBoating is sponsored by boat manufacturers, and not a bad place to look.

So far about 7 months. :D I woke up one morning and thought "I want a boat". A few days later I had a boat... :)

Re: How long did you own your first boat...

First boat was a small plywood dinghy that I bought (bare wood) and had to glass the seams and paint...I was twelve years old at the time. It was another year or so before I saved enough to buy a small outboard at Sears. I used the boat in a nearby lake for fishing...had to carry it with friends about two miles in order to launch. Finally got smart and bought a chain and lock so that I didn't have to lug it back and forth each summer day...just locked it to a tree and carted the motor in a wagon. Sold the boat to help pay for my first car after 4 years.

first boat 1996 crownline 176. had it for 2 1/2 years. Someone told be the two happiest days of your life are the day you buy your first boat and the day you sell your first boat. They were right at the time, because I borrowed for the first boat and after awhile the monthly payment outweighed the monthly enjoyment. I now have a 19ft fish and ski with a 125 mariner that I own free and clear and wouldn't part with it for the world. It's not so bad letting it sit during the offseason or the weekends I have to work when I no longer have to make a monthly payment. Good luck. :)

1st boat? About 7 months. Dave Morse & I built it out of a loafing shed his dad wanted torn down. We made a sort-of-jon boat, caulked it with roofing tar and fished and duck hunted on the Fox River (Ill). We were 15 at the time, no life jackets, of course, and home-made oars. Couldn't get it out of the mud in a Nov. snowstorm, and left it there.
But it started my life-long love of boating, and subsequent boats were of better quality and lasted longer. Now I are a hearty seaman plying the mighty Columbia (ARRRGGGG!!), and I'm more comfortable and in a much more reliable craft, and still having fun....but at a greater cost!

Re: How long did you own your first boat...

I have been there and done that. I am 37 years old. Married. 3 kids. Decided I wanted a boat in June 2003. I bought it off the dealer's lot in mid July 2003 (Boston Whaler 160 Ventura). I traded it in in November for a 19 footer. Wait. Let me let that sink in: I bought a new 20k boat and sold it/traded up 4 months later. If it weren't so stupid it might be funny :D !

Great advice from one of the posters above who said to read up on the different hulls, etc. and to fully understand your needs. After you do all that, and come up with the perfect boat, wait a few more months and save some 'mo money and go 2 feet bigger :p

Re: How long did you own your first boat...

Let's see.

My Dad had a wooden runabout before he and my mother got together. When I was 3 he got a 16ft Glaspar Avalon with a Merc 650 (65hp) outboard. We all skied behind that sometimes 2 at a time on singles. In 69 we went to get a 95hp (Which was the "Max Recommended" for that boat. The place we got the boat from sold us a Merc 1250 (125hp) for the same price as the 95 would have been. In 1989 I got a 17ft Chris Craft Cavalier and had the old motor installed on the back. Ran it till 93 when the motor sucked a reed valve and took out #5 piston. Couldn't afford to have it fixed or replaced, so gave it back to the credit union. Moved up to Washington in 95 and got a 16ft Jolly Rodger with the same Merc 1250. Sold that and got a 1996 Glastron GS 160 (16ft) Boat and trailer for 4200.00 Drove 15 miles and picked up a 1979 Mercury 140hp for 2800. Been running that ever since. I can pull 2 and if at sea level, I can pull 3 on single skis. It's very fast and lots of fun. I took the test boat out with a 115 and tried to flip it, swamp it, and drive it under water in reverse. I was not able to sink it, so I got it. The 115 motor did real nice on it, but I didn't like the new 115's that idle on 2 and then the other 2 come on at 1800rpm's, so I went for an older inline 6 and if a little HP works, then more works better.

Good luck in your hunting. READ EVERYTHING you can get your hands on about the boats for what you want to do with it and please, do yourself a BIG favor. Get the biggest motor you can with what ever you buy. You don't have to use the extra power, but trust me, when you need it. You will be glad it's there. And with a more powerfull motor, you don't have to work it as hard as if you get a smaller one.

Craig
