I was listening to the radio this morning and they reported that we in New Jersey sit in traffic congestion for an average of 48hrs a year. With predictions for next year to be up to 72hrs. That's three day's you are just sitting in your car doing nothing.

The politicians have bonded so much that the state's transportation trust fund is only paying debt service there is no money for road improvements.

With No real public transportation everybody needs their car and car pooling has been tried and failed. The HOV lanes made things worse instead of better. I know from personal experience that my 40 minute commute has taken 2 hrs+ at times. Anybody else with similar problems.

I commute from Keyport (Parkway exit 117) to Hoboken (Holland tunnel entrance) everyday. No traffic it is a 37 mile, 55 minute trip. It has taken 2-3 hours depending on how many idiots crash on the way up. I leave at 6:00am now and usually make it in by 7:00, 7:30 is the latest.

JG, for 15 years we commuted more than 50 miles away and sat in more Houston traffic than I care to remember. It was a nightmare.

Now, I drive 14 miles down the island and look at the beach the entire way. The only traffic I sit in now is during spring break.

Steve that is exactly what I find. I have made it out to Green Brook in 35 mins for a 42 mile ride but one accident can take that trip and turn it into a 2-2.5 hr trip. Thankfully I have numerous back roads I can take IF I here something in time and can get off of I78 then it will take me about 1-1.5 hrs but there are certain spots where if something happens I'm stuck and can't bail for 4-7 miles.

I feel for you I'm always hearing about crashes on the turnpike or the Garden State Parking Lot. I heard one today jack-knifed tractor trailer and 5 cars in New Brunswick Thank God it's a holiday and there was not much traffic, idiot cut off the truck which is the reason IMHO that there are a lot of truck accidents.

I would be off today but if we work we can use the day another time I figure warmer weather sounds better, can go boating then..

From The Hideout to the nearest supermarket is 20 miles.

I sometimes have to sit 2 or 3 minutes at the one traffic light, and there are 2 stop signs on the way.

Average is about 20 minutes each way.

What is it really worth to maintain the high standard of living that city commuters usually "enjoy"??

Problem is JB is I'm not commuting to the city. Although, a lot of the traffic on the roads I'm traveling the people are doing just that. I make decent money but would be willing to take a cut to be able to have a 10 min commute.

The big problem here in Jersey is the indiscriminate building. We are developing at a enormous pace. Local zoning and planning laws can't keep up with it and the state never planned for the type of developing that is going. They (authorities in the know) say that even before the plans for a new road or improvements leave the drafting table they are already obsolete. The other problem is no one is willing to make the hard choices. They Floated a gas tax but there was such an outcry that the Governor didn't support the committees recommendation that he commissioned. So we made our bed and now have to lie in it.

I don't think there would be such a problem with the tax issue if the state made an effort to tighten it's belt, But we are not seeing that so of course we get ticked.

I travel from Galveston County to Chemical Ally (Deer Park Texas) every day about 40-45 minutes one way.

I used to commute 23 miles to JB's old hometown, Rosslyn, VA which is just outside of Washington DC. It used to take 90 mins each way. If it was raining, it would be at least 2 hours each way.

I don't miss that at all - I'm now 13 miles each way. Takes about 30 mins. I love it!

JB I'm with you. When it costs more to park a car than buy a car, it's time to move. I have never had a neighbor I didn't have a beer with.

I would rather drive to the city for "culture" than drive to the country to relax.

I've got the best of both worlds in the suburbs. Where I live is really a unique area.

I can be at farms and mountains in under an hour and I can also be at the Washington Monument in under an hour.

There is a feed store and 5 star resturants just a few miles away.

I like the rural life better, but love being able to go to the city anytime I want.

Even in the high tourist traffic times during the summer, the wait is never more than a few minutes. Just another blessing of living in a small town...

15 minutes to the school. The only thing that would cause a delay would be a tractor going down the mountain rode or the wonderful(NOT!) Tulley fog. Yep, it's that time of year in the Central San Joaquin Valley. Haven't seen the sun for a week now. Please sun come back! Please!!
Trip to town, Fresno, takes an hour, but just make a day of it and get all those important things done in one day. No hurry! But by the time we get back home we don't want to go for at least another month and that works out great for us because we don't like it. Yuck! traffic, stop lights and rude people.
I'll never go back to city life.
Bassy

I've got a 9 minute commute to the shop if I get stuck behind that old guy. One stop sign. No buses. And the lake is literaly a stones throw away! Once I leave the shop though, I drive all over the place (company time, company vehicle). I can drive 100 miles plus in a day. Usually about 40 though, round trip.

I drive approx. 15 miles to and from work.

If I do get caught in traffic, I may wait 10 to 15 minutes top.
It's worse if I get caught downtown at 5:00p or get stuck behind the 'gray-hair and knuckles' driver... You know what I mean... All you can see is a steering wheel, knuckles and grey hair... Driving 5 miles per hour? LOL!
Please shoot me when I'm that old.

Our traffic however... is getting worse every year.

Why?
You guessed it... Too many Californians and Liberals moving in! :D

This used to be a quiet little town, but not anymore. It's too big for me now.

H.
