I have a 55 hp chrysler magnapower 2 on a 15 ft Glastron with a 32 lb minn kota trolling motor. The owners manual recommends a 70 amp/hp battery for the engine. I have read where some say I should use marine starting battery for the engine and a deep cycle for the trolling motor. At over $200 each do I need both or can I use just 1 for both applications.

Welcome to iboats!

What you heard is in fact the usual practice, but your prices are way off, at least for standard wet cell marine batteries. Figure around $75 to $100 each. Get the largest you can fit in the available space.

And Glen is also right, but for the one that will solely power the trolling motor, I would go for a deep cycle. A dual purpose would be a good choice for the other battery.
