I have a 1987 4.3L OMC I/O. I'm pretty sure the starter is toast as it doesn't crank and no amount of cleaning the terminals or smacking with a hammer (rust falls off it though) has helped.

Anyway I'm trying to pull it, but my crappy manual doesn't show how many bolts hold it in. I took one off but after looking at it harder it just looks like that one holds the flywheel cover to the block. I found another one on the bottom of the starter and it's currently soaking in Liquid wrench as it wouldn't budge. Is there more than that one? Every car starter I've ever removed has two.

I can't seem to find another one anywhere and I've felt all around the starter. I did remove the brace from the commutator end

any help is appreciated.

There's 2 3/8ths bolts, Straight Up, at the back of the starter....
Probably looks just like the 1 Soaking, only Closer to the Block........

There is also a slave solenoid up near the distributor, did you check it?

The mounting bolts are staggered, this picture is of a newer starter, but the mounting holes are the same.

If it's that confusing, then he doesn't need to be working on it at all.

90 deg to the left right? LOL
Good point Don!,

Found both of 'em okay thanks a bunch.
Of course now the easy one (closest to the edge), is playing I don't wanna break loose and of course my bestest friend has borrowed my homemade breaker bar (piece of pipe that slips over ratchet and is actaully the handle for my floor jack). An honest to goodness breaker bar isn't working as I only have about 15-20 degrees between the motor mount and the oil pan to play with and of course the orientation of the socket with regards to the square hole left me cursing :)

Well it's time to quit for the day but thanks again for your quick responses and great info!
Just a matter of physics to get that baby to break loose.

Now you understand why it's not a good idea to use a air ratchet. You pull the trigger and the ratchet slams your hand into the engine long before the bolt breaks loose.I personally use my craftsman 3/8 fine tooth ratchet and I made a cheater pipe for it out of 1/2 electrical conduit, put in the vise to smash it to the right size to fit the handle.

I have found a better method than pipes and breaker bars to remove stuck bolts.
I go get one of the younger guys at the shop and tell them the old man just aint strong enough anymore and could they come bust this bolt loose :) :) . saves my hide anyway :) .
but somedays the my artheritis wont allow me to loosen a hose clamp hardly.
