How many fenders?

After several very windy dockings, it's becoming apparent that I need fenders. Fortunately, I have only minor scratches (on the boat).<br /><br />Any suggestions for a 16.5ft Aluminum? Two or four? Small ones OK, or the bigger colored ones? Do I need enough for both port and starboard?<br /><br />Any input appreciated.

I have a 16' with four of the 18" x 4" variety but barely use two of them. Usually you just need one on the stern and one amidships. The extras are for when you are rafting up between boats or if you have to moor nose in, in which case I hang one from the bow and set the other three on the sides as best I can.

suzukidave has it right,<br />unless you're rafting up then two is all you need. I've only got two of the round cylindrical type but am going to change to the flat squab type after seeing how the commercial boys do it. Plus they double as extra seating!<br />Ross
