I have a (see signature) :D

Anyway, the boat was used two maybe three times last year with maybe a total of 5 hours - should I change the impeller this Spring?

Is there a certain amount of hours you should go by before changing impellers?

Thanks,
Ollie

To err on the safe side, pull your existing impeller out and let it set for 10 minutes. If the impeller vanes straiten completely out, the impeller is still OK. If the vanes are still twisted in the position they were when you pulled, the impeller has taken a set, and should be replaced.

If you want complete satisfaction of prevention of overheating, replace the impeller and put the 5 hour old one you pulled out in a zip lock bag, and place it in your glove box or tool box as a spare in case of emergency.

Merc suggests 300hrs or 3 years whichever comes first. I personally think they are about a year too long for those short vaned pumps. 2 years is more like it. 300 hours or 2 years would be my suggestion.

I was inspecting every 50 hours and replacing every 100 hours. Usually there were 1 or 2 blemishes to be seen on the impeller after 100 hours
.
Then I got a sea water strainer. . . much better. Like Don said, I don't think I'd go near 300 hours on the same impeller, but maybe 200 hours, now that I have the sea water strainer.
