I drive an automatic now, and a few years ago I started setting my parking break every time because a transmission guy told me i should. It seems like everyone who drives my truck does not even think to check that the parking break is on before they drive off.

How many people ever use their parking break? I would have to guess maybe 15 percent.

Living in Northern Montana, no way no how, you learn real quick in the winter that setting your parking brake is a very bad idea, if I need to ensure I don't roll, I carry a block with me in the car and place behind the wheel, but when I first moved here from a warmer climate, I set my parking brake out of habit and I was late for work many times due to the brakes freezing up..so I never set the brake now...

i would think people in the mountains would set it more, due to the big hills you sometimes park on.
I hear stories of people in frostburg, md sliding down streets in the snow, but thier wheels are not moving.

I only set my parking brake when on inclines or declines. I set the brake before I place the gear shift into P. This prevents strain on the tranny and the jarring lurch as you put the vehicle back into drive. BTW I live in warmer climates and do not have to worry about freezing brakes.

Only when launching and retrieving or any other towing tasks on an incline.

If they can drive off with the parking brake set, why bother setting it?

I currently drive a manual and always set the parking brake.

Never did when driving an automatic.

You just do not use them here in VT .......... you should exercise it so it does not seize but I have seen far too many freeze up for days.

I had a couple of Corvair Powerglide power trains in VW busses. That tranny did not have Park, so the parking brake was mandatory (and stuck occasionally, even in FL).

My guess is that all powerglide and maybe some other early automatics lacked Park.

I still use it, but only when stopped on an incline.

Having owned a truck with a manual transmission, I always set the parking brake. Even though I now own a truck with an auto transmission, that habit carried over.

What I find strange is that I never use the parking break in the wife's minivan, unless i'm on a hill. I still haven't figured that one out.

Me too from Colorado, I will also add that here in Colorado the ramps are pretty freaking steep and I tested the parking brake on my 2006 1 ton dodge and my 25' crownline.......didn't even slow it down so adjusted it and tried again same thing!! so I just plan differently, everyone in the boat when I am backing down the ramp, wife takes her off the trailer, fun fun

I use it on all my vehicles when parked on ANYTHING short of perfectly flat.

(I also once owned a '91 Buick Regal. Those of you who had that vintage GM W body car surely know what I'm talkin' about)

Only when launching or retrieving, my truck is an auto. Many years ago I had to spend over an hour under my old Chevy pickup with a camper on in deer season burning old newspapers, maps, and any thing else I could find to unfreeze my parking brake. Never again

I use it all the time on my daily driver (Mazda B2500, 5 speed). Its been known to roll a little even in gear on anything the looks like a hill.... gotta love 4 cylinders...lol

On my tow rig (5.7L Tundra) I use it on the boat ramps only. I don't really need to, but it just seems like the thing to do.

Not here, unless I'm worried about it rolling off a curb.
