How many problems w1999 merc opitmax have you had or heard of??

I am considering purchasing a boston whaler powered by a 1999 merc optimax 135 with 50 hours. I was told that the Optimax series from that year are unreliable because they were a new product from Mercury that had not had the bugs worked out. Anything to this? Also any concerns with an engine that is 5 years old that has sat for most of the time? What engine work should I expect to do to ensure optimum reliability?

I just got through reading a book by Pascoe. A marine surveyor. He says to stay away from Mercury optimax. between 1999 and 2001. they never worked out thier problems.Im looking as well.

the 2.5 litres optis are NOT the problem.. 135, 150, 175.... are there updates... sure.. as in any new product from year to year.... the 2.5's have been very reliable Motors.. 3.0l's 200's & up.. another story.....
