I'm in the market for a new boat and am looking at Alumaweld Intruders. I thought I had decided on a 20'er and then realized I could get the 22' hull for less than $1000 more.

On the 20' hull I was going to put a 150HP Yamaha 4 stroke,if I decide to get the 22'er I don't want to put alot more power on it if its not needed. The dealer says a 150 will be perfect for the 20'er.

Of course the dealer says anything less than a 225 (maxed out HP)will be far too small for the 22'er. The bigger hull only weighs 180lbs more than the smaller hull. I don't see why another 75HP is needed to push the extra 180lbs.

The 22'er weighs 2025lbs and has 1900lbs of capacity, will a 150HP motor be enough to give decent performance?

You can always back off the throttle but youll never get more than 100% no matter what motor it is.

Once you decide on the smaller motor and someone gets sick, or hurt, or youre trying to outrun that storm, how much would you pay for the extra 75 hp then?

An underpowered boat is a very dangerous thing.

if your underpowered the motor will have to strain to push the extra weight. If the boat is rated for 225 max and you can afford it go with that, cause you have to think if you have alot of gear and people in the boat then it will be more than 2025lbs that motor is trying to push.

A jet would be wasted money in my case. I'm not into river or shallow water fishing so a prop is the only way for me to go.

I've looked at 225s and they seem to all be about 5K more than a 150. I guess if I'm going to drop 40K on a boat, whats another 5K.

It all depends on what your expectations are. A 225 on a 22'alumnium boat would be an overkill to me. I would think more in line with a 175.

I own a 22 foot aluminum boat that is the same weight and design as the one you are getting and I have a 175 yamaha 2 stroke on it. (Its a Stabi-craft) I cruise at 35mph and top out at 45mph. If I had to replace it I would get a 200 yamaha, anything more would be overkill. Also look at the weight difference between the motors it is a factor to consider.

The only reason that I would increase my hp on my boat is because the current engines weight more then the engine I have.

I have a question. I am looking to purchase a 18 foot jon boat and was wondering if my 9.5hp johnson will be big enough to handle it? It pushed my previous 14 footer no problem at a nice pace. I really just need to make sure.
Thanks
