Looking for your oppinion. I have a 85' sleekcraft 26 ambassador with a volvo 280 trimmable outdrive. Engine is a small block. Prev. owner gave me list of whats in the motor. Could anyone take a guess at what HP and redline for the following config.
4 blt. main/High volume oil pump/Windage tray/Skat steel crank/Skat full float rods/10.5 popup pistons/Dart heads/194 intake/Z28 springs/Titanium retainers/stainless exh. valves/roller rockers/HD pushrods/Dontoff 330 cam/Tru roller timing set/Wyan manifold/MSD billet distrib. electronic.
Not even shure if this motor requires valve adjustments. would this motor have hydraulic lifters? Any advice would be appreciated.baught a year ago and cant find the prev. owner..THKS Much.
Paul in lake havasu, az

IMHO it doesn't sound like a good boat motor. Horsepower is not your concern. The question is where do those big heads and cam put the torque curve. If that motor was built for high rpm power, it'd be wasted on a boat that needs its power in the low to midrange. A motor built for power at higher rpm could actually hurt the performance of your boat.

with 10.5's you may find a detonation problem in midrange cruiseing that could lead to piston failure. keep an eye out for spark knock. the duntov30/30 cam is not nessasry cause there are several others that are as good and not quite as agressive. keep a look out for water in the manifolds with that cam. I think merc uses a test that drills and taps the lowest manifold exhaust outlet near the head and installs a pipe plug. they pull the plug and collect the water, more than 2 CC (ithink) is no good after a 30 min idle test. is the MSD distributor vented and screened? what I am asking is it a marine MSD. the rotating assy you have if properly assembled shoud attain 6500 with no worries. the 30/30 cam was initially offed only in solid lifter version. however its my understanding that later versions were hydraulic. need the lifter or cam part#. its possible to use hydraulic flat tappets on a solid lift cam. not the reverse. if the lifters are roller then they make a roller hydraulic and roller solid for that motor. roller lifters require guides and need rev kits.horse power should be in the 325 range if properly set up. comparable to some of todays marine 5.7's. you may find some of the parts are over kill. full floating rods tend to have a shorter life span than pressed but there again it depends on who floated them and how. and are they bushed or steel at the small end.
but if ya really wanna spin her up go with moldex billet crank and vasco-jet rods on manly 11.5 pistons with manly billet valves. then add a programmable fuel injection set up and dry stack the exhaust :) . eventually the drive will be the weak link.

Did someone drop a Corvette motor into a boat ? The rotating assembly sounds impressive, the cam and distributer are very questionable for a boat....for that matter the compression ratio is a bit much for a boat. Ok, I go back to my original sentence....kool engine.....not what I would want in my boat. Very nice for street/strip, wouldn't want to run it flat out for hours on end.

WOW!, thanks for all that info. I do hear a slight det. ping at about 1500 rpm when rolling up out of the hole but am able to throttle past that det. point fairly easily. usualy 3000 to 3700 rpm out of the hole. (not sure about this prop.) As for the det. I am able to buy 100 AV gas at the airport for 2.12 per gal. (no kidding). Would this be recomended to solve the det. problem?
I dont of coarse expect this boat to go fast as it is realy a tank with a small block and is always full of camping gear and an occational fat chick.. I always operate the boat at 3000 to 3500 rpm wich gives me 30 to 35 kts. wich makes for a comfy ride on the chop and good gas usage. It does throttle out of the hole supprizingly well, so i dont plan to change anything. Was wondering how long this motor will last if i keep being easy on the motor. Thanks for all your replies.
