How much is too much trim?

Hi, I took my Fisher 16 Avenger out yesterday for the first time. I noticed that when I trim it up, I get more RPM's and more speed as expected. Question is, how much trimming up is too much? Can I somehow listen for a certain sound from the motor or prop? I don't want to overheat my rig by starving the water intake either. Any thoughts? Thanks

My suggestion would be to never trim it past the point where the TILT is taking over from the TRIM. This will ensure that your water pickup is always in the water. Altough I've never done it, I imagine you would hear a sudden increase in RPM if your prop got too high in the water.

What Jack said, and a little more.<br /><br />Too much trim can do two bad things: cause the prop to ventilate (engine revs, speed drops) or porpoising (bow rises and falls as though going over swells that are not there).<br /><br />If you can get your trim to the point that it tries to switch to tilt without either of those happening, you could probably rig the engine better. It may be too low, or it may be too far "out" at neutral trim.<br /><br />Good luck.
