If you mean that you can pull the prop shaft in and out a quarter inch, I think you have a broken snap ring on the inner most gear or a sheared pin that holds the gear to the shaft. I think if you try to run it, you can damage more expensive parts. I would drop the lower unit and dissassemble it.
