Need to do a 6' x 5' floor section for a friend do not want him to buy more than he needs. He cannot be around fumes because of medical reasons floor was cut out so he could clean out fueltanks and change fuel lines. I have glasses small areas but nothing this size going to lay one layer of material will that be enough plus carpet will go over the floor. Thanks for any reply's.

The second sticky at the top of the forum will tell you all you need to know...has all the ratios and formulas you need.

Good luck with you project.

You'll need to precoat the wood with Poly and then add 1 layer of 1.5 oz CSM on the bottom layer of the wood. On the top Lay two layers of CSM and you're done. 6 yds of CSM should do it and 3 gallons of resin.

Will it really take 3 gallons of resin? I'll be doing a 5 X 9 floor and I thought 1 1/2 gallons would be more than enough. I guess I need to rethink before I buy the resin.

yeah i though about that too... Resin is expensive. But its true, that fiberglass just drinks it up ... and its better this way.. for a little bit more expense your boat will last longer if fiberglass work is prepped and done properly

Re: How much resin do I need?

MATERIAL.........................................GALLONS
1.5 OZ MAT = 1 gallon covers 4.2 square yds
2.0 OZ MAT = 1 gallon covers 3.4 square yds

There are about 150 ounces per gallon by weight
1.5 ounce cloth ( cloth not chopped mat)?.1 gallon wets out 40 square yards
2.5 ounce cloth?.1 gallon wets out 25 square yards
4 ounce cloth??1 gallon wets out 15 square yards
6 ounce cloth??1 gallon wets out 10 square yards
10 ounce cloth?..1 gallon wets out 6.5 square yards
18 ounce woven roving ?1 gallon wets out 4.5 square yards
24 ounce woven roving ?1 gallon wets out 3.5 square yards.
Biaxial mat 1708.????.. 1 gallon wets out 4 square yards
Please remember several things:
- these are estimates not hard and fast rules.
- if you are laminating over wood, the raw wood will soak up some resin, which is good, but you will use more resin on the first layer.
- thin resin goes farther than thick resin.

By the time you precoat the wood, allow for any waste, you're gunna be cutting it close with 3 gallons, IMHO.

Re: How much resin do I need?

buy a 5 gallon pail, I am not sure where you live but my fiberglass supplier sells gallons for near 50 bucks, but he sells 5 gallon pail for 115, so if ya bought 3 @ 50 your wasting 35 bucks and 2 gallon. can never have enough resin! Any left over save for your next oops moment!
