How much Resin on a floor? Where to buy?

Im about to install a new floor in my 17' v hull.....the area is 10'-5' How much resin should i expect to use to first roll the ply top and bottom then glass the top with another coat of resin? Im guessing a gallon will do...close?

Hard to say really. Seems like you might need a bit more, which is on the safe side in my opinion. I am no expert though... I am sure someone else in these forums will help you out. Best of luck, be sure and post some pics soon!

Bob's got you pretty well covered, Don's How to thread has a great deal of great info in all those links.

But, no, a gallon of either epoxy or polyester resin won't be enough.

This free download @fiberglass work, may help you estimate the amount of material you need. Epoxy does not 'work' with all fiberglass cloth.

What else has lead up to a new deck? Is the old completely removed? If the deck needs repair, in what condition are the stringers & transom? How did you assess those?

It may help to start 1 main thread & have this thread question & this thread's question all in 1 place. It helps keep everyone helping out & asking questions moving in the same direction and in the same 'boat' as it were. It seems like you answered the under deck questions already.

It would be helpful to others that follow you, that also own a Sportcraft to use your rebuild as a reference.

BTW if this is your first dance with resin and your telephone rings or you get any interruption it will harden FAST. You are going to go through a learning curve that can be frustrating and expensive at times. Only mix resins in small amounts. LOL You have been warned!

even experienced users of resin end up with a bucket shaped resin sculpture every now and again.

I personally would apply the first coat or resin to the pieces individually before installation. This will give you some experience with the resin and you can get the "feel" for it.

If you have a way to weigh the fiberglass you are going to use it will take about 2 times that weight of resin to wet it out. The wood would also take some. So, three times the weight of the glass is where to start. With polyester anyway, I don't know how to do it for epoxy. !0 pounds of glass over wood = 30 lbs of resin. Over other fiberglass, 20 lbs. Polyester is about 9 lbs per gallon.

50 sq ft and you need to coat the wood top and bottom. That = 100 sq ft. Then you need to apply CSM to both top and bottom, that's another 100 sq ft, then tab it to the hull and then at least another layer of either CSM or 6 oz cloth for the final layer. that's another 50 sq ft. So... give or take accounting for absorption of the glass about 300 sq ft of application. Based on that, I would say you will need approx. 7-8 gallons of a good laminating resin to do the job properly. And, that's if you don't have a lot of waste.

Now, if you are talking Epoxy and your are not using glass mat or cloth then 1-2 gallons would prolly do the job.
However you must either paint, or use some other method to protect the epoxy from UV rays as it has no chemical properties in it for that and will deteriorate if left unprotected.

where do you get your best prices on fiberglass supplies? Locally or online? I priced both and locally its available NOW and the resin is cheaper than online because theres no $15 shipping cost but the cloth is 3 times the price?

Is there an online store for resin and cloth that has no or low shipping?

Be careful of what resin you are purchasing. It makes a difference for the type of work you are doing. Off the shelf bondo repair kits/resin is not good for complicated layup projects since it contains wax.

For cloth, mat, csm I personally have had luck on ebay and locally. I knew a boat builder that would make rowing shells and he had huge rolls so, I used to buy from him. I grew up on LI but I have no idea if there are any manufacturing places (big or one man size) in your area.

Since you have posted another question about resin....... I will combine your threads. We like to keep peoples questions and projects together. It is a housekeeping thing but trust me in the future it is easier to reference one thread and cuts back on the hunting time

I found an epoxy dealer in NH but I have not tried his product (yet) to sincerely recommend it. Epoxy resins are more money but this guy is cheaper then west systems.

A few people here in the past have purchased there fiberglass resin from body shops that do fiberglass work. I do know LI has these You might have to bring your own 5 gallon buckets.
