I recently had a baby (2 wks old) and have been off work for several months. The this past weekend my husband had to have emergency surgery and will be off work for several weeks. In order for us to get through the next few weeks we've decided that we have to sell our boat...and need to do so fairly quickly.

We have a 1985 Cobia Odyssey 18' cuddy with a 115 Mercury outboard engine. It will come with the trailer as well. Our family has had so much fun in this boat and it kills me to think of getting rid of it. The boat runs great! We've never had any problem with it at all and it is ready to throw in the water and go! It has plenty of power to have all the fun you want to in it.

1985 Cobia Odyssey
Seaworthy and Safe
Great for your children-mine had a blast all summer on the tube!
Very Sturdy even in rough conditions-WOT often at Cumberland Lake with no problems
New Foam V Berth in 2003

1985 115 Mercury
Ran smoothly all summer long with absolutely no problems!
Refurbished in 1996
Carb rebuilt in 1999
Zippy and economical to operate

Shorelander Trailer
Surge Brakes
Bearing Buddies
New Tires

We are asking $2000 or best offer. Do you think that sounds fair? Am I asking too much to get rid of it quickly? You can email me at carebear3030@cinci.rr.com. Here are a few pics.

This thread seems more like a classified ad than a question.

Sean

carebear,

you're probably going to take crap for appearing to try and sell your boat here, but i don't really care.

i don't know how much your boat is worth. what i do want to say is you should reconsider selling it. if all you're going to get is $2 grand, why bother? it appears from the pictures that it's worth much more to you and your family than that.

if you are in a bad situation with money, i doubt the 2 grand is going to solve everything. talk to your creditors, they actually do listen. most will work with you if you simply call them and explain your situation- before you start missing payments. most will help you set up smaller payments for a period of time or defer payments all together.

you can also look at debt consolidation programs and small loans. hell, anyone can get a credit card for 2 grand these days.

good luck-

Sounds pretty cheap to me.
Looks like a great deal, I'd jump at it if I had a use for a boat that large.

But, if you value the boat, I would consider selling a car or truck/tow vehicle instead. It will be a lot easier to find a good replacement car , than to find a decent boat in good condition.
Its also easier to get a loan for a car.

Perhaps a family member could buy it from you and keep it in storage. Then you can buy it back from them after you get thru this rough period. Kindof like a private family run pawn shop.

If you can't afford to buy it back by next spring, then you can sell it.

Good Luck.

Re: How much should I be able to get....

Sorry for the tough times CB. matt has the right idea in my book about getting some help from family. However we don't know your situation.

Anyway as to selling - That is a sweet looking rig and I would think you will have no trouble selling it if you must. My hunch is that your price is way to low but I have no sense of the market you are in. I would think more of $4,000.00 for an asking price & go from there. Don't take the 4 grand as a hard number as buying a boat is a highly emotional thing and the number you get on a forum may have little relation to the market. My experience says that for time of year is one of the most vital factors on how quick a boat will move (you did not tell us where you are at). For example in the northeast you may get 50% more for a boat in April-June than November-February.

A good source for prices is the boat section of trader on-line (also available at many convenience stores). Do a search & check simular rigs for your location. And there is also eBay. Also consider listing with iboats Classified.

CareBear,

If that rig is "turnkey ready" and in as good a cosmetic shape as it looks in those pictures, it is worth a good $4500 to $5000 in my book. Do ANYTHING YOU CAN other than sell that right now for $2k.

Even so, I like roscoe's and SoLittle's suggestions...try to get a 6-month "interest free loan" from a friend or family member using the boat for collateral; if you still need the money next Spring you will get a MUCH better deal for your boat.

CareBare, Same situation DONT DO IT! We loved our boat and was unable to replace it for six years! and as Matt said it didn't take care of the problem anyway.End Result:Deep regret& depression.Your boat is one of the only things that may give the family enjoyment and take away the daily stress that life often brings. If you were to sell it now, years or maybe months from now you may want a boat again, and not be able to aford to get one. For only $2000, it is really not worth it. Hold on to it and you will get through your times of need, and still have that luxury of being able to get out.

Maybe your bank will give you a loan with the boat as collateral. Maybe a friend or trusted associate from work will buy it, with the agreement that if you don't buy it back by a pre-determined date, they can sell it with a clear conscience.

Don't dispair! With the new baby this should be a happy time. One of my neighbors fell on hard times and was in danger of loosing his house. A well off man who he had done some work for in town bought their home, let them pay what they could every month, and sold it back to them two years later. You never know where your friends are.
