How much water from the prop?

The question was asked before but I didn't see a definitive answer. How much water should be blowing out of the prop at idle, in neutral, with a hose and ears on? How much in gear? (170 Merc with Alpha 1 drive). At idle I have water gushing out of one hole low in the gimbal housing and a good steady stream from the little hole down on the starboard side of the lower drive but not much out of the prop. I'd say it accounts for all the water going in. Didn't have any of it before I rebuilt the pump.

Re: How much water from the prop?

I don’t know if this helps much but I don’t think you'll see any water out of the prop at idle or in gear (I don’t) I think that’s more of a high speed thing the fact that you have
“At idle I have water gushing out of one hole low in the gimbal housing” tells me your fine as far as circulation
So my 2 cents, Gushing is good,
Are you having cooling problems?
If not leave it alone!

Re: How much water from the prop?

1974 Merc 140

Per the manual, can't have too much hose pressure, so I open my garden hose faucet 1/2 turn. It's my own well, so that probably doesn't do you much good. With the stern drive all the way down, in neutral or gear at idle about half of the water comes out the prop. The rest comes out the bypass holes on the bottom of the gimbal housing and the small hole on the starboard side of the lower unit. With the stern drive up halfway or more, nothing comes out the prop, most comes out the bypass holes.

With the drive down, I think you should see some out the prop, but I'm not an authority on the subject. It's possible, but probably not all that likely, that you have some blockage in the stern drive exhaust path. Have you confirmed that your exhaust shutter is in place? Mine was completely missing; I'm still not sure if the two halves blew through or are stuck in the drive somewhere.

> I'd say it accounts for all the water going in.

I'd certainly hope so! (Think about it for a while.)

Steve

My 140 merc blows a little bit of spray from the prop.
Most of it runs out of the holes and at the base of the prop.

I have the same combination engine and drive. I get the exact results as you. Looks like most comes out one side of the holes in the gimble housing and a little out the prop.
