I just started my '60 lark 40 horse after having gone through the whole thing. I am running it on the taco (muff thingy for skeg) and while it steams and spits water out the hole in the back after it warms up, it doesnt seem like much unless you run it up past idle speeds. It does dump a good amount out the back of the skeg tho..

I have a new water pump in it and boiled the thermostat, which opened at 160f, so I stuck it back in with a new gasket. was that a no-no?

If it starts spitting water out after the T-stats open, and runs out the bottom as well, I think you're ok....

Well personally I would have replaced it while it was out, the manual states that the t'stat should open between 130-150 deg. for that model motor.

You are fortunate as some aren't that easy to get to.

As a side note my brother had a turn signal go out in a '95 Ford Probe, repair shop wanted about $350.00 or so to replace it, ($2.00 bulb). After doing it myself I could see why as you nearly had to remove the whole front assembly to access it. I replaced both sides while I was at it :D

OK got a new T-stat. and it seems to open a bit earlier. :)

Is there an actual pee-hole on this motor? (if there is mine is clogged) or is it just the upper exhaust hole that spits the water to tell you its cooling?

No motor I know of had a Pee hole before the year 1978. My Johnson 1975 15 HP and my eariler 9.5 Evinrude both have a 3/8 exhaust relief below the power head and water exit above the cavitation plate. These motors run on Muff get no water out at the back relief hole until after the thermostat opens. Even then most of the water will exit at the water outlet holes.

If you run it on the water or in a tank then the upper exhaust relief hole will spray more water due to exhaust back pressure. Still I know of no motor that had a true PEE hole before 1978.

Your motor sounds 100 percent normal to me. If you have a IR Heat Gun or some melt sticks check your head temperature. If it running 140 to 150 degrees it is perfect. Another way is to put your finger on the head. It should be hot but not burn you in a second or 2.

sweet! Thats what I was hoping you'd say. my IR temp gun says 148-152f when all warmed up. Now if it would just quit raining I could do my sea trial!
