1997 sunbird 200cc - weighs about 2600lbs w/ fuel
1998 johnson 150hp - weighs about 475lbs

trying to bottom paint while the boat's on a bunk trailer. was going to start by painting everything i could reach/see. then lift up the bow with strap/come-a-long and paint some more. finally, slide the boat down the trailer aft and paint the rest.

friend said i could lift the bow from the eyelet, but i see it ripping out. any opinion? if my concern is warranted, what other options do i have to perform this task (excluding blocks at a marina). thanks-

move her aft on the trailer so the weight wants
to push the bow up by itself. be sure to have
something below transom that keeps it from going
too low. The bow eye is useful keeping her secure
but is not stressed.
good luck,
M.Y.
ps. trailer must be secure of course... :p

Or try to borrow a nylon strap/sling to put under the boat and lift with your come-a-long. The bow eyes are not made for lifting.

This is kinda related but not directly. Many boats have a lifting eye up front some of which are connected to the bow eye. In any case it pays to check the condition of the entire assembly once in a while - especially below deck. Years ago I had one break due to rust on a 8,000 lb boat as it was being hoisted off the trailer. Fortunately it was only a couple of inches above the trailer bunks and no damage.

Mattttt,

Actually, your friend is right. Alot of the manufacturers use the front eyelet to hoist the boat around. Most lift the boats by the front eyelet as well as the two rear trailer tyedown eyelets. The front is lifted with a split padded cable, so that part of the cable goes on each side of the bow.
