When I first got the boat here, bottom paint was pretty good, a few flakes, and top end was about 42.

Previous owner did not bottom paint this year, maybe not last year, and did not run it much this year since he had a new boat and was selling this one.

The more I run the boat the more paint comes off. The bottom of the boat looks like a diary cow now, with 2" to 4" spots where the paint has completely flaked off. Pretty much the entire hull.

Top end last night was only 38. No wind or tide to speak of.

I'm not looking forward to sanding and repainting but know I'm going to be doing it.

My question, can these paint flakes hurt my top end like this or is something else going on?

i will say almost 100% that it's your hull. i didn't believe hull condition played that much a part until it happened to me. you can look up my old posts, but i was one of the few that got scammed by dolphinite paint, and used their new clear paint on my boat. crap didn't work and flaked off, resulting in extensive bottom growth. now we're talking barancles and not just flaking paint, but i lost about 12 mph and alomst 1500 rpms if i can remember right. even after i power washed the hull and removed most of the growth, i still had issues. after sanding the entire hull past the gelcoat and repainting did i regain my performance.

it takes about 2 weekends, but it's not that bad. sand that crap off, clean the hull well, and use a good ablative paint. i suggest interlux micron csc.

I never made good time when my bottom was flaky, either, but now that I'm married it doesn't...oh, I see, sorry, never mind.

:)

HA!

I took a good look at it yesterday and it's in bad shape. The surface is very rough and there is a lot of flaking. Good news is I was mentioning the whole thing to a friend and he offered to help sand the hull with me since I always take him out fishing. :D So at least there'll be some help!

Thanks.
