Re: How much would it cost to rebuild my inline 6?
Oz -

Sorry to hear about your motor. I did read your other post. Your picture looked just like my motor after it died - except mine ate the number 2 piston. At least you have a definite cause - operator error. I am still not exactly positive what caused mine to fail, but I know that I added oil to the gas.

That 140 sounds nice. You may want to rethink it. Give it a compression test etc and find a cheap way to get it home. Then rebuild the carbs - water pump - change lower unit oil - grease the thing - and give it a try.

Rebuilding is a lot more work than I was prepared for - but I have no experence with this stuff at all. Once you get it apart you will want #3 cylinder bored, and probably #4. So those two cylinders will need new oversized pistons - I found them for about $70 each. Each bore cost me $60 bucks each. And the other 4 cylinders - you are gunna want new rings right? Well - you can't get rings for those pistons so guess what - you will need another 4 regular sized pistons and you will need all your cylinders honed so the new rings seat right. On top of that you will need all new gaskets, some new nut's and bolt's, etc... If you break any bolts during disassembly the machine shop can get them out - $18 each. There's probably some more that I forgot.

TMD had it right - you need to take it apart to see what else went bad. Fried bearings? bend any rods?

All added up it is less that the rebuilt head's they offer on this site - but not by much. If I had any extra money over this summer I would have considered that option a little more.

Good luck on whatever you decide.
