From the ad:

"Trailer in good shape axles replaced 2 years ago. Runs good but currently the batteries are dead on it.
1991 20 ft center console, 200 HP Yamaha engine. Engine rebuilt in 2006. Live well.
Only getting rid of the boat due to have moved away from florida and not near water anymore. Asking 3500 or OBO."

Don't need to get burned again. I payed $2k more for my bowrider than I should have, then had to pull the engine and completely rebuild.

Please help me navigate the minefield that is buying old, used boats.

Price sounds fair.

Your biggest concern on most of these boats you're considering is rot. You want a solid deck and transom. ANY soft spots is usually indicative of more serious issues.

A compression test and a sea-trial would you avoid a lemon.

If all is "O.K." with the engine except a dead battery my bet is the seller would have gotten the battery charged. A HUGE BEWARE !!!

Translation.....

The trailer was never taken care of that's why the axles were shot. Ditto the last 2 years so new axles will be needed again.

We could'nt get the darn motor started and we killed that batteries in the process. Trust me....charger up and she'll run fine.

Ditto for taking care of the motor...these Yamis last almost forever but we killed ours and had to get her rebuilt. Not sure of how good the mechanic was that did it - maybe that's why she won't start!

The live well is the only thing that works!

Not near water = the best excuse we could come up with.

"OBO" (as opposed to "firm") means we don't expect to get 3500 but we'll ask that much because that's that's what NADA says.

Tell the seller, "I'll be over; charge the batteries." When he gives some bogus excuse, tell him you'll be over with your own battery and to have her ready.

LOL! That's a good translation!

I've noticed that people expect full NADA retail for non-running project boats. When I was sinking money into my first boat, my wife said we should just sell it and be done with it. I replied, correctly, "Honey, a non-running boat is basically worthless."

Overpriced and waaaaaay too many potential problems. It's an older boat, as others have said it's obviously been poorly maintained, and there are plenty of other options.

$1500 tops and that's if it runs. Keep in mind, you're going to have over $1700 in it just after you replace the batteries and I'll bet if you buy it, you find other stuff that runs the total tab over $2k just getting it into safe seaworthy and roadworthy condition.

If the guy is listing $3500, it'll take 2 or 3 people to show up and then pass before he decides it's worth it to drop the price. With the benefit of hindsight, my advice is call once, then let some time go by before you actually go to see it. If you show up as a potential competitive bidder, you'll end up overpaying. If you show up as the contingency plan, you might get a deal but if not then you move on to the next opportunity. With so many boats for sale, time is on your side as the buyer.

It's getting funny now. I posted another thread about an 18 ft '89 Bayliner CC with a Force 115 that hasn't been cranked in 8 years. No cushions either. The guy just texted me that he's firm on a $2000 sell price. Earlier that day, he said his mom, who runs a Greek pizza restaurant, was very astute and he'd have to run my $1500 maximum offer price by her. I told him I no longer pay full retail for project boats.;)
