Okay, i love my little 16' checkmate ski boat..but...it is just that.. little and cramped. I ran across this in my local craigslist:

http://kansascity.craigslist.org/boa/2291853423.html

My plan would be to take the 115 inline 6 off of my boat and transplant it onto this. Obviously... with the circumstances of this boat, i would definitely be concerned about the transom, and i would drill the transom before any papers were signed. Anyways, i dont believe a boat without a motor is worth 1,500.00 when the boat is 22 years old, no matter how nice. I was thinking Maybe 800.00, but what would you guys pay?

Re: How much would you pay?

I just picked up a 1988 2000sr, for $750. 305 i/o. interior is ok, but could use some work. they didn't winterize it so it needed a motor.

I would start offering @ $500 even lower if there is other problems with it.

since the motor fell off, I would look everything over really good, especially since the cables needed to break off. Never know what damage was done that those pictures do not show.

thanks for the input. Good call on the cables and whatnot. I am not sure what would cause an outboard to just "Fall off" Bolts loosened over time?, non-stainless and corroded through? Who knows

Hard to say, but the key picture there that craigslist is lacking is the actual transom.

My first thought when I read "motor literally fell off", was, How much of the transom fell off with it? Then I saw the picture starting just beyond the transom, and thought, imagine that!!!;)

You never know, the boat could prove to be a good deal; but I wouldn't count on it... Certainly not at 1500. I agree with jopes, I'd offer 500... But that's if the boat has a transom that's fully intact, and not rotted out. Look at the boat. Check every square inch of the deck for soft spots. Who knows, the boat could turn out being worth closer to what he's asking. Good luck. Keep us posted.

Re: How much would you pay?

Hey it's my boat! Just with original seats and not-crappy cushions. We paid $900 for ours, with motor. However in this part of the country on craigslist it was a steal. After a switchbox and starter I'm at about $1,100 in it. So if it were for sale here it would be overpriced I think maybe a little. It is in really good shape compared to mine.

dolfan, out of curiousity, what do you power yours with? I know i will lose some speed if i went to a bigger boat, i currently can get about 52 mph on my current setup, i would like to see at least 43-45 if i did the swap.

Re: How much would you pay?

I'd be real interested in the whole story about the motor falling off before getting the least bit interested. Did it "fall off" when the PO hit a USO in which case some of the transom to also "fall off"? Was he anchored and all of a sudden the motor just dissapeared into the deep blue? Did he hit on a mermaid which lead to upsetting Neptune and have to pay a pennance equal to his motor?

Seems wierd, be sure to come back and let us know the story.

I would look at how much a motor would cost for that boat and add the boat motor and about $1000 all together and see what other boats you can get for that amount that already run well.

I once had a outboard fall off our sailboat into someone else boat. Got to love thieves!

Got a 90hp Mercury inline 6 on mine. Does about 40mph with just me on board.

Re: How much would you pay?

Okay everyone, I have an update. Aparenty the stock motor (a 90hp force) hit an underwater obstical. The motor sheared off of the mount and fell into the deep blue. It is believed that the mount may have bees cracked beforehand and a combination of vibrations and hitting the obstacle sheared it. What do you all think? I almost can't help but think the transom is pretty solid if the mount itself sheared. I am thinking about driving down to look at the vessel, it is a few hours away.

I know this wasn't directed at me, but figured I'd reply since I have basically the same setup. I have a 1995 Maxum 1800XR with a 120ob on it. I get about 38MPH with 3-4 people onboard.

Just presuming it will be a project, I'd say the hull is 200$ in my eyes. I remember when those were new and that was a really nice boat.

I think with used boats the market depends on the location. I'd been looking at craigslist for months before I bought mine, and for $1000 you could RARELY find a boat with a motor and trailer that wasn't a small aluminum with a stick. Judging by the vinyl, which looks original, if he took care of the rest of the boat as well has the interior looks like he did, it might be a good buy. Not for that price, but looks like it's in good shape.

Re: How much would you pay?

I'd say definitely worth a drive and a look. You want to be real sure that the transom didn't suffer severe structural damage before the motor mount let go. Take a buddy with you and have him reef back and forth on the transom from the outside while you crawl under the back with a real good light and look for hairline cracks (or worse) in the corners and the floor.

Also, crawl under the boat and have a careful look at the gelcoat around the back. When the motor let go the prop may have contacted the hull and taken a chunk out of it.

Another cost to factor in will be switching over the control box to a Merc unit. There might also be some minor electrical incompatibilities to sort out. Also, be sure to check the capacity plate on the hull to make sure your motor is within the posted hp max capacity.

If the boat is in good shape and you can talk him down you might just end up with a nice rig once your motor is on it.

Good luck and let us know how you make out!

So you blast in with a bash on the tinny & tiller folks. Elitist.
Welcome, BTW.

Re: How much would you pay?

That looks like my boats twin! I didn't think Maxum built an 18 footer in 89. Check the capacity label, I bet the maximum horsepower is 85 like my 89 1700SR. The price seems a bit high! It does look to be in as good of shape as my 89, but I don't think I could get much over $2,200 for mine with a running outboard, if that much!

There isnt an 1800 for 1989 on NADA guides, who knows. I emailed with a lowball of 500.00, we'll see.
