So my father and I swapped out the cracked block on my '97 stingray 220 LX, and after about 15 hours decided to winterize it. I go to swap the oil filter and holy cow...that thing was tight. Fought it for 2 hours. Does that make me a bad mechanic or did it have something to do with being new filter on new block?

Heres a pic of all that was left....photo (12).jpg

Well ,if you didnt oil the rubber gasket that does happen ,also too tight will do it.

That's classic! So many people feel it's best to use that oil filter wrench and give it another turn! My remote filter has a blemish in the machine surface and if the slightest torque is applied, it peels the seal right off. Run it up, then about 1/8 turn.

Yeh I definitely learned my lesson on this one! Now lets hope that fuel filter isn't the same way....

Did you lube the seal with a little engine oil? I've never had problems with ones I've put on, but some that other have.......

Lube the seal with engine oil, tighten HAND TIGHT only....

Chris.......

I've seen some badly mangled filters in my day but this is tops.
The only thing that could beat it is if it was also rusted out and mangled!

Sell it on Craigslist. "Like new" in the description!

Yeah never seen that before, even on a car. Someone did not lube the seal and torqued it down pretty good. Even with a hand tight and 1/8 turn they are a bear to get off after they have been on there for a while.

Ok, I'll admit it. Sometimes I over tighten them. And pay the price in the spring.

Wow, 2 hours huh? I have an adjustable chain type wrench I use for stuff like that. As long as I can get it right up on the engine end I can usually get stuff like that off. Then charge the customer a pia fee.
