How Reliable Are VRO Systems

My nephew has bought a 1996 70 hp Evinrude that has VRO. I have heard that the VRO systems often fail and result in damage to the engine. Is this true or are the systems now reliable?? The last motor I owned with VRO was a 1989 70 hp, that the previous owner disconnected, so we just mixed oil the old fashioned way. Any thoughts out there.

The 96' model should have the newest VRO system, and shouldn't cause any problems if you keep it clean and well maintained..... :)

The systems are only as good as the maintenance they recieve. There are hundreds of thousands of them out there that are, and have been, absolutely trouble free.

There are really only about two things that need to be done, at least annually.

1. Check all lines for tightness, cracks, etc.

2. Dump the old oil. Refill and run 50:1 pre mix until you verify oil useage.
