Ok, I have an 89 Johnson 90hp. I'm replacing both t-stats with new cork grommets and new gaskets. Is it possible to put the t-stats in the wrong way (wrong orientation). Should the spring end point in towards the motor or away from it. I can't remember how they were when I took it apart. Please help. Thanks.

Shawn, easy way to remember....spring into the motor. Meaning that the section of the t-stat with the spring goes into the motor. The roundy top faces out.

The thermostats fit into the plastic valve body the spring away from the block, on V4 cross flow.

Re: How Should Thermostats be Oriented???

Thanks Clanton... You're right! I just got back from my local dealer where I bought the parts. The service manager showed me the expanded view via the parts manual, and the spring DOES face away from the block.

This is a great forum with lots of knowledge. I'm just glad I don't have to take everthing apart. Those 2 bolts on the sides were a pain in the a**. :)

Thanks again guys!

I would put lots of sealer or grease on the bolts that hold the thermostat housing to the block.
