How tight do you tighten the nut when installing different prop

I have a 1996 200 EFI with a 23 ptich tempest prop. I'm repalcing the tempest 23P with the same prop without the dings. How tight do you tighten the nut? I don't won a torgue wrench. can overtightning hurt?

Most props call for 50-55 ft lbs. Can over tightening hurt, yes! You could strip out the threads.

just tighten until there is no play left and install cotter pin

Not all props have carter pins. Some tabs to bend over.

Not to mention how this affects the ability to change the prop...on the water!

Most of the emergency prop wrenches are floating plastic units...and will handle the prop nut up to 55 ft lbs, but not much beyond that.

I just replaced my alum. prop and Merc. ( I have an out board ) told me 100 lbs on and w/ replaceable hubs and 55 lbs on props w/ permanent hubs.

Yes, but an inexperienced boater may spend the next three days trying to find a non-existent cotter pin . . . Clarity is a good thing, not a slam ;)
