1972 Evinrude 9.5hp, Model 9222:

How tight should the prop nut be? Should the prop move a little, along the prop shaft, or should the prop nut be snug against the prop?

Is it hand tight only? Doesn't look like something one is supposed to put a wrench on.

Thanks,

if your talking about the plastic piece that you out the split pin thru then it should be hand tight just snug agains the prop , you have to be able to put the pin thru the hole on that prop shaft

Re: How tight should the prop nut be?

This raises an intersting question.
What if the pin cannot be inserted becase the holes in the prop nut do not line up with the holes in the shaft?

I have used a wrench to snug the nut enough to align the sets of holes. The premis being that snug was better then allowing the prop to slam around on the propshaft.

???

Good Luck
HAVE FUN!

For a '72 25HP, which is the closest manual to your motor that I have, the specs call for torquing it to 90 in-lbs and then continuing to tighten until the cotter pin holes line up. In practice, I have always just hand- tightened it snug and then continued tightening until the holes line up. Have never had any problems. Hope this helps.

Should the nut allow the prop to move AT ALL??--or should the prop be stationary??
By the way, this website is AWESOME!! Just got my first boat EVER and haven't had it wet yet, but I feel like I have learned alot of stuff that only experience can teach you just by reading through these forums! A big thanks to all that have contributed their knowledge here!:D

The nut needs to hold the propeller firmly but you still need to get the cotter pin through the hole in it's nose. Depending on the propeller, you can use the nylon washers from a hardware plumbing department to take up the slack if needed.

Clcik the thumbnail, please.
