How to adjust 1991 force l drive linkage?

Hello,

I'm looking for some help adjusting my 90hp force l drive linkage. I put a new impeller in my lower unit and struggled a little hooking the linkage back up. The throttle is a little stiff going forward and even more stiff putting it in reverse. When I pull the throttle out to rev the engine it's completely smooth and moves freely. The lower unit gear rod moved up and down with no issues. Is there a way to adjust the linkage or lubricant it somehow. There was a piece on top of the lower linkage rod that has a small bar going through it for the linkage to connect to, it was loose so I did tighten it and had no reverse. I had to take it all apart and loosen that piece to get my reverse back. Any ideas????

As you can tell by the number of replies, you have a b***ard setup. From your description, I can only suggest more looser.

The piece you are talking about threads onto the vertical shift rod for the lower unit. You adjust the throw into forward and reverse by threading this piece further onto, or further off of, the vertical shift rod. It will be "loose" once you set the correct height. Not sure why you are having a hard time shifting, but find the correct center then get under there and make sure everything is lubricated properly. Post some photos and I can provide some more information......

Ok. I will drop the lower unit again and back off the nut a little. What's the best way to lube the line(cable) that move the linkage rod?
Thanks for the help.

I just use a spray lube on them....

Re: How to adjust 1991 force l drive linkage?

It looks like the issue was the shift cable. While working on the adjustment the cable that attaches to the control lever broke. The sheith broke away from the area that held the cable in place, now when you go in reverse the whole cable moves. A found that the cable for replacement is a teleflex gate cable(cc213-14). Is the 14 foot length correct. Also how hard is it to replace the cable. Is there a special way to remove the control throttle. Any tricks???

Thanks guys for all the help.

I just went through a similar issue but didn't have to replace a cable. The cable itself should be pretty easy to replace....just remove some straps and a cotter pin on the leg. The throttle should also come off fairly easy, I just pried off the front cover and there were 3 screws with a bracket. Just make sure you put the new cable into the correct locations in the back of the shifter.

Length should be printed on the housing. Replacing is simple R and R.(remove and replace) as opposed to (rest and relaxation). Pay attention to distances exposed on the threaded portions.

I don't know about your setup (different year), but with my O/B, the outer sheath moves while the cable itself remains stationary.

It's all back together. New cable and thru hull fitting. Everything seems to be working fine. I have neutral, forward and reverse. Only question is I hear a little click in the lower unit when I go into a gear. I can't remover if I heard it before, so I was wondering if its normal.

Thanks guys.

A click or a clunk? You should hear a clunk indicating the drive dog has engaged.....

Just a small click. It gets in gear fine. I took it out for a test drive and it seemed fine. If you go very slow in gear it clicks. If you push it in normal it jumps right in. No click.

Shouldn't go slow into gear anyway...... Not that this explains it.....
