Hi,Folks,
I beleive my carbs are running to lean. Its an 1983 85 hp chrysler force outboard.Had it serviced last fall and when i tried it out it seemed fine other than lower mph than before, runs smooth when low speed and idle. It seems to use more fuel than before and exhaust seems to be darker than before.I wanted to run all the fuel out of onboard tank ,just to start with clean, I was cruising at 20 mph and about 30 seconds before it ran out of fuel it picked up speed to 30 mph on its own. After i switched to a small tank i was travelling again at 20 mph ,i than closed the vent to see what would happen and it again picked itself up to 30 mph before stopping because the of vent being closed.
Does anyone think that maybe lack of fuel and more air made the speed pick up on its own?
If the problem might be carb adjust, then if someone could tell me how to do it ,i wouldnt mind trying it myself.
Autos i have done minor work on so i ama bit inclined.
The place that did my service before has sinced closed up,this is why i am looking for the info.
thank you very much for any help offered.

At the top of the threads on this forum is a FAQ thread. Inside is a sticky called link and sync, I suggest you start there and order a fuel pump rebuild kit (its only like $6-12 bucks). I find that performing the link and sync, and the pump rebuild (super easy) clears up most issues. Make sure the carbs are clean, and stay away from standard carb cleaner sprays. If they need cleaning, dissasemble them and use wd-40 to blow through passages. Then you can use compressed air to follow.

That speeding up is just something they do.
Don't know why??
Setting the carbs, after the linc and sinc.
Turn the air screw in to the bottom(gently)then out 1 and 1/16 turn and leave it there.
Your done!!
That's the way the factory says to do them.J

i don't know a lot about outboards but all my atv 2strokes all would rev high when running out of gas because it was making it run lean. Its when you have gas and it revs high is when you need to worry. That means you have an air leak and its sucking in air where it shouldn't be.
